October Events in Sunset Beach
You might think that Sunset Beach sounds like a place you want to visit in the summer, but it’s actually a great fall destination, as well. In fact, October is packed with more events and happenings than any other month on the calendar. There are tons of things coming up this October for visitors and residents alike to enjoy. Here are just a few of them.
The Sunset at Sunset annual celebration takes place in early October at South Beach. At this event, you can celebrate the town that you live in or are visiting with original photography entered into a contest as well as a painting contest featuring paintings of the island’s favorite Pontoon Bridge.
There are a couple of fishing tournaments in October, including the Fall Brawl and the US Open King Mackerel Tournament. Both of these events take place in Ocean Isle and are really interesting to watch.
The North Carolina Festival By the Sea at Holden Beach is a must-see festival. It is mostly a craft show where you can enjoy browsing through and buying crafts from tons of local vendors who are unparalleled in their arts. Of course, there are also food vendors there as well as lots of activities for the family to enjoy.
In Little River, you can enjoy the Shrimp and Jazz Fest, and in Ocean Isle, you can hit up the North Carolina Oyster Festival. Both of these are excellent festivals for foodies of all sorts, and they both feature live music and family activities. The Wilmington RiverFest is the last of the October happenings in the Sunset Beach area. It features historical displays as well as current art by local artists. Of course, like any other festival, it also has lots of yummy food to enjoy!

What’s Happening in Sunset Beach in Late Summer?
Late summer is a fantastic time to visit Sunset Beach, NC. By then, some of the tourist crowds are trickling down, and events around town are actually picking up pace. When the weather cools a bit, people are more ready to be out on the town and have a good time. There are lots of events to look forward to in August and September in this area of the North Carolina coast.
The Brunswick Islands Saltwater Classic takes place in early August this year. There are separate tournaments for all kinds of fish, including dolphins, kingfish, mackerel, and redfish. Even amateurs can have a great time hanging around these festivals, where people will bring in some of the largest catch you’ve ever seen, guaranteed.
Also in August is the Tom and Huck Raft Race and Boiling Springs Lakes. This is a great way to get your kids involved in something fun, and it can be a great event for the entire family.
In September, you can enjoy the Labor Day Music Extravaganza at Bald Head Island. The music festival features all sorts of music by local artist, food, and fun events. Plus, there is a shag dancing contest for couples who are interested in loosening up and learning something new.
September also brings the Annual Oak Island Surf Off, where surfers compete in the chilly waters of the Atlantic for great prizes. For kids, there is the annual Children’s Crab Derby in Southport, where kids can cheer on their crabs and have a great time with other family activities.
Throughout the fall, local resorts host music nights and other events, as well. The community is packed with things to do in the fall. All you have to do is figure out what’s going on while you’re in Sunset Beach!

June and July Events in Sunset Beach
June and July are great months to visit or live in Sunset Beach, NC. These months are warm and sunny, and if you get too hot, you can always go take a swim in the ocean. Plus, there are lots of things going on around town. Around June, resorts and restaurants start kicking off their summertime free concerts, and lots of places are hosting small community events. If you want to be around for some of the big happenings, though, here are a few things to look forward to.
In June, you’ll have the Jolly Mon King Classic fishing tournament, which focuses on deep sea fishing and which gives great prizes. The tournament actually runs out of Ocean Isle Beach nearby to Sunset Beach. Also in June is the 4th of July Festival Freedom Run, which is actually held at the end of June. Obviously June is just a competitive month in Sunset Beach!
The events in Sunset Beach in July pretty much center around the Fourth of July, and celebrations could go on for days. Besides simply watching fireworks out over the water, you can also enjoy festivals with plenty of food, live music, and activities for the entire family. There is a Fourth of July Festival in Southport, a Picnic and Carnival at Baldhead Beach, and a Battleship Blast in Wilmington. With all those options, there’s no way you’ll be bored in July in Sunset Beach.
All of these events are great, but don’t forget that Sunset Beach is a great place to relax even if there isn’t anything special happening. Enjoy the wildlife at the beach, relax by a pool, or play a round of golf. In the midst of your vacation, it’s simply more fun to have an event to look forward to.

Wintertime Happenings in Sunset Beach
Residents of Sunset Beach, NC know that even during the winter, the beach is beautiful. It’s not as warm, but it never really gets cold in this area, at least not by Northern American standards! Even if you end up taking a retreat to the beach in January or February, there are still events going on. If you’re thinking of moving to Sunset Beach, this is even better news! There’s always something to look forward to in this small town.
In January, you can enjoy the annual Brunswick Stew Cook-Off, sponsored by the Brunswick Chamber of Commerce. Taste test lots of yummy seafood-based food at an event that’s fun for the whole family. February usually holds a Living Civil War program in Winnabow, which is also great fun for everyone, especially those kids who are fascinated by United States history.
By March, things are already starting to warm up in Sunset Beach, so events start to move outdoors. There is an annual Home and Garden Show in Shalotte at the beginning of the month, and later, visitors can enjoy an amateur wine tasting event.
One the flip side of winter, there are also some fun events. In November, you can enjoy a community 5K, a Thanksgiving fishing competition, and a rowing regatta and Christmas shopping extravaganza in Little River. In December, the holiday season reigns in the events around town, and you can enjoy Christmas tree lightings and Christmas parades in the small North Carolina towns nearby to Sunset Beach.
All of these events are great for the entire family, and they just go to show that you shouldn’t assume there’s nothing to do at the beach unless it’s warm. The small communities surrounding Sunset Beach always hold something or another to do, and you can enjoy your time there no matter when you go!
